About the kg to Pounds Calculator
Kilograms are the world's standard unit of weight, used on scales, food labels, gym plates, luggage allowances and medical records almost everywhere. Pounds remain the everyday unit in the United States, and pounds and stone are still how many people in Britain and Ireland describe their body weight. Converting kilograms to pounds is one of the most frequently needed everyday calculations.
This kg to pounds calculator converts kilograms to pounds exactly. It also shows the weight in pounds and ounces, in stone and pounds, and in ounces alone, covering body weight, baby weight, baggage and cooking.
How to Use the kg to Pounds Calculator
Enter the weight in kilograms. Decimals are fine, such as 3.45 for a newborn or 72.5 for a body weight.
The pounds appear straight away with pounds and ounces, stone and ounces.
The Formula
pounds = kilograms ÷ 0.45359237
ounces = kilograms ÷ 0.028349523125
stone = pounds ÷ 14
The pound was defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms in 1959, so the conversion is exact. Dividing by 0.45359237 is the same as multiplying by about 2.20462.
Step-by-Step Example
70 kg to pounds.
70 ÷ 0.45359237 = 154.324 lb
Pounds and ounces: 154 lb + 0.324 × 16 oz = 154 lb 5.2 oz
Stone: 154.324 ÷ 14 = 11 st, with 0.3 lb left over
So 70 kg is 154.324 pounds, 154 lb 5.2 oz, or 11 st 0.3 lb.
One kilogram is 2.20462 pounds, or 2 lb 3.3 oz.
Quick Reference
1 kg = 2.20462 lb
5 kg = 11.0231 lb
10 kg = 22.0462 lb
20 kg = 44.0925 lb
50 kg = 110.231 lb
60 kg = 132.277 lb
80 kg = 176.37 lb
100 kg = 220.462 lb
The Double-Plus-Ten Rule
To convert in your head, double the kilograms, then add a tenth of the result. For 70 kg: 140, plus 14, gives 154 pounds — within half a pound of the exact 154.324. The rule works because 2 × 1.1 = 2.2, very close to the exact factor of 2.20462.
Body Weight
Scales in most countries show kilograms, but in the US people talk in pounds and in the UK often in stone and pounds. A weight of 60 kg is about 132 lb or 9 st 6 lb; 80 kg is about 176 lb or 12 st 8 lb; 100 kg is about 220 lb or 15 st 10 lb. A change of 1 kg is about 2.2 lb, so a loss of 5 kg is about 11 lb, and a gain of half a kilo is just over a pound.
Gym and Sport
Weight plates come in both systems. A 20 kg Olympic bar is about 44.1 lb, a little lighter than the 45 lb bars common in American gyms. Plates of 25 kg are about 55.1 lb, and a 100 kg lift is about 220.5 lb. Weight classes in boxing, wrestling and weightlifting are often published in both units, and a few tenths of a pound can matter at a weigh-in, so use the exact figure rather than a rule of thumb.
Babies and Children
Birth weights are recorded in kilograms or grams in most hospitals, while many parents know weights in pounds and ounces. A baby of 3.5 kg weighs 7 lb 11.5 oz; one of 3 kg weighs 6 lb 9.8 oz; and one of 4 kg weighs 8 lb 13.1 oz. Doctors dose many children's medicines per kilogram of body weight, so keep a record of the kilogram figure too.
Luggage and Parcels
Airlines set baggage allowances in kilograms on most international routes and in pounds in the US. A 23 kg checked bag allowance is about 50.7 lb, and a 32 kg heavy bag about 70.5 lb, slightly more than the familiar 50 lb and 70 lb limits. Cabin bag limits such as 7 kg or 10 kg are about 15.4 lb and 22 lb. Weigh a bag at home in whichever unit your scale uses, convert, and leave a small margin, because airport scales and home scales rarely agree exactly. Parcel carriers also price by weight bands, so a few grams over a band can raise the cost.
Food and Cooking
Meat, flour and produce are sold by the kilogram in most countries and by the pound in the US. A 1.5 kg joint of meat is about 3.3 lb, which matters because cooking times in American recipes are often given per pound.
Understanding Your Result
The headline is the weight in pounds.
The pounds and ounces line splits it into whole pounds and ounces to one decimal place.
The stone line gives stone and pounds for weights of a stone or more, or the fraction of a stone for lighter weights.
The ounces line gives the total weight in ounces.
When Should You Use This Calculator?
Use it to convert body weight for health forms, fitness apps and conversation.
Use it for baggage allowances and parcel weights in kilograms.
Use it for gym plates, sports weight classes and training logs.
Use it for baby weights and recipes that give ingredients in kilograms.
Common Mistakes
Multiplying by 0.4536. From kilograms to pounds, divide by 0.45359237, or multiply by 2.20462.
Writing 154.3 lb as 154 lb 3 oz. The decimal is a fraction of a pound; 0.3 lb is about 5 oz.
Using 2.2 for precise weights. It is about 0.2 percent low, which matters for weigh-ins.
Forgetting stone is 14 pounds. 11.02 stone is 11 st 0.3 lb, not 11 st 2 lb.
Mixing up mass and force units. Kilograms and pounds here are everyday weights, not the newtons or pound-force used in physics and engineering.
