About the Countdown Calculator

Some moments are worth counting down to the minute: the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve, a product launch, the start of a sale, a flight departure, an exam, a wedding ceremony or the end of a long working week. The countdown calculator tells you exactly how long remains until a chosen date and time — in days, hours and minutes — and gives the same interval as totals in hours, minutes, seconds and weeks.

By default it counts from right now, using the clock on your device. You can also count from any other date and time, which is useful for planning how long a campaign, event or offer will run.

How to Use the Countdown Calculator

Enter the target date.

Optionally, enter a target time, such as 18:30 or 6:30 pm. Leave it blank for midnight at the start of that day.

Leave the from date blank to count from now, or enter a date and from time to count from another moment.

How the Countdown Is Calculated

  time left = (target date and time) − (from date and time)

  days    = whole days in the difference
  hours   = remaining whole hours
  minutes = remaining minutes

  totals:  hours = minutes ÷ 60,  seconds = minutes × 60

Both times are treated as readings of the same local clock.

Step-by-Step Example

From 10:00 on 29 September 2026 to midnight at the start of 1 January 2027.

  Calendar days:   29 September → 1 January = 94 days
  Less 10 hours:   94 days − 10 hours = 93 days 14 hours
  In hours:        93 × 24 + 14 = 2,246 hours
  In minutes:      2,246 × 60 = 134,760 minutes
  In seconds:      134,760 × 60 = 8,085,600 seconds
  In weeks:        13 weeks and 2 days, plus 14 hours

At 10 am on 29 September there are 93 days, 14 hours and 0 minutes until the new year.

Midnight and New Year

Countdowns to a date usually mean midnight at the start of that day — the moment the date begins. That is why the target time defaults to 00:00. New Year countdowns count to 00:00 on 1 January, not to the end of 31 December, although these are the same instant. If you are counting to an event that starts later in the day — a 3 pm wedding or a 7:30 pm concert — enter that time for an exact countdown.

Time Zones and Daylight Saving

The calculator treats both the start and target times as readings of the same local clock, which is what people mean in almost every countdown. Two situations can make the real elapsed time differ from the result by an hour. If the clocks change for daylight saving between now and the target — in spring or autumn in many countries — one day is 23 or 25 hours long. And if the event is in a different time zone, such as a launch at 9 am in New York watched from London, convert the target time into your own time zone first, using a time zone converter.

Refreshing the Countdown

The calculation is exact at the moment you run it. Because time keeps moving, the result goes out of date by a minute every minute; simply press calculate again to refresh it. For a live ticking display, a dedicated countdown timer or clock app is more convenient, but for planning — how many hours of work are left before a deadline, how many minutes until a meeting — a calculated countdown is all you need.

Countdowns in Business

Countdowns are a familiar tool in marketing and project management. A sale that ends "in 2 days, 4 hours" creates urgency; a product launch counted down on a website builds anticipation; a project board showing the hours left before release keeps a team focused. For planning, the total hours are often more useful than days: with 2,246 hours until year end and 40 working hours a week, a team has roughly 13 weeks of work time left, before holidays. Converting a deadline into working hours makes it easier to see whether the remaining tasks will fit.

Counting Up Instead

If the target is in the past, the calculator counts the time since it instead, marked "ago". This is handy for measuring how long something has been running — a server's uptime, the time since a flight took off, or how long ago a message was sent — to the nearest minute.

The headline gives the days, hours and minutes remaining, or elapsed if the target has passed.

The target line confirms the date and time counted to.

The in hours and in minutes and seconds lines give the totals.

The in weeks line expresses the days as weeks.

The worth knowing line says what the countdown was measured from.

Common Mistakes

Forgetting the time of day. Without a time, the countdown runs to midnight.

Mixing time zones. Convert an event's time to your own zone first, especially for online launches.

Ignoring clock changes. Daylight saving can add or remove an hour in spring and autumn.

Using an old result. Recalculate to refresh the countdown, especially when only a few minutes or hours remain.

Entering 12-hour times without am or pm. 6:30 means 06:30; write 6:30 pm for the evening.
