Gift Budget Calculator

Plan a holiday or birthday gift budget: people in each group and what to spend on each, plus wrapping, cards and shipping, and how much to save a month.

To spread the cost.

About the Gift Budget Calculator

The holiday season, a run of family birthdays, or a year with several weddings can put a surprising strain on a budget. Gifts are bought one at a time, often on impulse, and by the time the wrapping, cards and postage are added, the total can be far more than anyone planned. The January credit card statement is where many people discover what the season really cost.

This gift budget calculator helps you plan before you shop. Enter the number of people you buy for in each group — family, friends, colleagues, children and others — and what you want to spend on each, plus wrapping and cards per gift and any shipping. It gives the total budget, the breakdown by group, the number of gifts and the average spent on each, and how much to save each month until the occasion.

How to Use the Gift Budget Calculator

For each group, enter the number of people and the amount per person. Leave a group at zero if you do not buy for it.

Enter the cost of wrapping and a card per gift.

Enter any shipping and postage in total.

Enter the months until the occasion to see how much to set aside each month.

How the Gift Budget Is Worked Out

gifts = Σ people in each group × amount per person
extras = number of gifts × wrapping and card per gift
  total         =  gifts + extras + shipping
a month = total ÷ months until the occasion

Step-by-Step Example

Six family members at 50, five friends at 25, four colleagues at 10 and three children at 30, with 3 of wrapping and a card per gift, saving over six months.

  Family: 6 × 50 = 300.00
  Friends: 5 × 25 = 125.00
  Colleagues: 4 × 10 = 40.00
  Children: 3 × 30 = 90.00
  Gifts: 18 gifts = 555.00 (30.83 on average)
  Wrapping: 18 × 3 = 54.00
  Total: 555 + 54 = 609.00
  A month: 609 ÷ 6 = 101.50

Setting Amounts That Work

Start with the total you can afford without borrowing, then share it out, rather than choosing amounts for each person and hoping the total works. Grouping people makes this easier: close family may get more, colleagues and neighbours a small token. It is also worth talking to family and friends. Many people are relieved to agree a spending limit, draw names for a secret gift exchange so everyone buys one good gift instead of many small ones, or buy only for the children.

Saving Ahead

Spreading the cost over several months turns one large bill into small, manageable amounts. Setting up a standing order into a separate savings pot on payday, from the start of the year or at least a few months ahead, means the money is there when you need it. Some people keep a small gift fund all year round for birthdays and unexpected occasions too, so they never have to take the money from bills.

The Costs Around the Gifts

Wrapping paper, tape, ribbons, gift bags, cards and stamps seem trivial, but they add up: at 3 per gift, eighteen gifts add 54. Posting parcels at peak season can cost more than the gift itself, and last-minute delivery charges are higher still. Buying wrapping in the January sales, reusing bags and boxes, and sending gifts early by standard post all help. Do not forget batteries for toys and gadgets, and the cost of hosting — food, drink and decorations — which belongs in a separate budget.

Keeping Track

Keep a simple list of who you are buying for, the budget for each, and what you have bought and spent. It prevents buying twice, shows how close you are to the budget, and makes next year's planning easier. Many phones have a notes or list app that works well for this, and some banking apps let you tag spending.

Thoughtful Gifts on a Budget

Some of the most appreciated gifts cost little: homemade food, a framed photo, a voucher for your time — babysitting, a meal, help in the garden — or an experience shared together. Buying throughout the year when you see something suitable, and taking advantage of sales, also stretches the budget without reducing the thought.

Gifts for Occasions All Year

Holidays are the peak, but birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, baby showers, graduations and leaving presents for colleagues come up throughout the year. Many people are surprised to find that these add up to as much as the holiday season. Listing the year's occasions in January, with a rough amount for each, and dividing the total by twelve gives a monthly amount to set aside. The same calculator works for a single occasion or the whole year: just enter everyone you expect to buy for.

Children and Teenagers

Gifts for children are often the biggest part of a family budget. Agreeing with other parents on a spending limit for birthday parties, and with grandparents and relatives on who buys the larger presents, avoids duplication and overspending.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set a gift budget?

List who you buy for in groups, choose an amount for each person, and add wrapping, cards and postage. Six family members at 50, five friends at 25, four colleagues at 10 and three children at 30 come to 555, or 609 with 3 of wrapping per gift.

How much should I save each month for Christmas?

Divide the total by the months left. A 609 gift budget spread over six months needs 101.50 a month. Starting early turns a large December bill into small, manageable amounts, and avoids borrowing.

How much should I spend on gifts?

Whatever fits your budget without debt. Many people aim for a total that is a small share of their yearly income, and many families agree limits or a secret gift exchange so everyone spends less and worries less.

What extra costs do people forget?

Wrapping paper, tape, cards, gift bags, batteries and postage. At 3 per gift, eighteen gifts add 54 before any shipping. Sending parcels at busy times of year can cost far more, so post early.

How can I cut my gift spending?

Agree a spending limit with family, organise a secret gift exchange instead of buying for everyone, give homemade gifts or experiences, shop early to catch sales, and keep a list so you do not buy twice.

Is it better to give cash or gift cards?

They are practical and avoid waste, but some people feel they are less personal. Gift cards can expire or carry fees, and money on a card for a shop that closes can be lost, so cash is often the safer choice.
