Hours and Minutes or Decimal Hours?

Both describe the same length of time, but they are used for different purposes. Hours and minutes (2 h 15 min, or 2:15) are how people naturally talk about and read time. Decimal hours (2.25) are needed for arithmetic, especially pay and billing: 2.25 hours at 40 an hour is 90. The two are easy to confuse — 2.15 decimal hours is 2 hours 9 minutes, not 2 hours 15 minutes — so always check which form a form or system expects.

Why 60 and Not 100?

Our system of 60 minutes in an hour and 60 seconds in a minute comes from the ancient Babylonians, who counted in base 60. Sixty is divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20 and 30, which makes halves, thirds, quarters and sixths of an hour whole numbers of minutes. The same heritage gives us 360 degrees in a circle. The cost is that time does not fit neatly into our decimal number system, which is why conversions like this are needed.

Everyday Examples

A 90-minute film is 1.5 hours. A 45-minute commute each way is 1.5 hours a day and 7.5 hours in a five-day week. A 25-minute workout five times a week is 125 minutes, or 2 hours 5 minutes. Screen time of 210 minutes a day is 3.5 hours, or about 24.5 hours a week — the equivalent of a full day. Converting to hours often puts habits into perspective.

For large numbers of minutes, days are the natural unit. A day has 1,440 minutes, so 10,000 minutes is just under a week — 6 days, 22 hours and 40 minutes. A year has 525,600 minutes (in a common year), a figure made famous by the song from the musical Rent.

Minutes in Pay and Billing

Payroll and billing systems almost always need decimal hours. Suppose an employee's clock-in records show 492 minutes worked on Monday. Dividing by 60 gives 8.2 hours, and at 18 an hour the day's pay is 147.60. Writing the same time as 8 hours 12 minutes and then mistakenly typing 8.12 into the payroll system would pay for only 8.12 hours — 146.16, which is 1.44 short. Over a year of such errors, the difference adds up. Converting minutes to decimal hours carefully avoids the problem.

Converting Hours to Minutes

Going the other way is a simple multiplication by 60. A 1.5-hour meeting is 90 minutes; a 2.75-hour exam is 165 minutes; a 37.5-hour working week is 2,250 minutes. This is useful when a task or a device measures time in minutes — a microwave, a parking meter, a phone plan or a timer — but you know the time in hours. For fractions of an hour, remember the common ones: a quarter is 15 minutes, a third is 20, a half is 30 and three quarters is 45.

Rounding Minutes

Some workplaces and billing systems round minutes to a set increment before converting. Rounding to the nearest 15 minutes turns 7 minutes into 0 and 8 minutes into 15; rounding to tenths of an hour counts time in 6-minute blocks. Rounding rules must be applied fairly — in some countries, employers may round clock times only if the rounding averages out and does not systematically underpay staff. Convert the exact minutes first, then round as your rules require.
