Time Zone Converter

Convert a date and time between world time zones — London, New York, Karachi, Dubai, India, Tokyo and more — with daylight saving applied.

Daylight saving depends on the date.

24-hour or am/pm, such as 14:30 or 2:30 pm.

About the Time Zone Converter

Calling family abroad, joining an international meeting, catching a live sports event or product launch, or planning a flight all raise the same question: what time will it be there? Time zone differences are not fixed — countries move their clocks for daylight saving on different dates, and some never change at all — so a difference that was 4 hours last month may be 5 hours today.

This time zone converter turns a date and time in one zone into the matching time in another, using the time zone database built into your browser, so daylight saving is applied automatically for the date you choose. It shows the converted time and date, the UTC offset of each zone on that date, the difference between them and the equivalent time in UTC.

How to Use the Time Zone Converter

Enter the date — it matters, because daylight saving depends on it.

Enter the time in the first zone, in 24-hour or am/pm form.

Choose the from and to time zones.

The converted time appears immediately.

How the Conversion Works

  1. find the offset of the first zone on that date (e.g. London, UTC+1)
  2. convert the time to UTC: 09:00 − 1 h = 08:00 UTC
  3. find the offset of the second zone at that instant (e.g. New York, UTC−4)
  4. convert from UTC: 08:00 − 4 h = 04:00

Going through UTC, the world's reference time, handles every combination of zones and daylight-saving rules correctly.

Step-by-Step Examples

9:00 am in London on 29 September 2026.

  London: UTC+1 (British Summer Time)
  UTC: 08:00
  New York: UTC−4 (Eastern Daylight Time) → 04:00, 5 h behind
  Tokyo: UTC+9 (no daylight saving) → 17:00, 8 h ahead

9:00 am in Karachi on 29 September 2026.

  Karachi: UTC+5
  UTC: 04:00
Los Angeles: UTC−7 (Pacific Daylight Time) → 21:00 the previous day

9:00 am in New York to India. New York is UTC−4 in summer and India UTC+5:30 all year, so it is 18:30 in India — 9 hours 30 minutes ahead.

Daylight Saving Time

In many countries the clocks go forward an hour in spring and back in autumn. The United States and Canada change on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November. The European Union and the United Kingdom change on the last Sunday of March and the last Sunday of October. Countries in the southern hemisphere, such as Australia and New Zealand, do the opposite, changing in April and September or October. Many countries — including Pakistan, India, China, Japan and most of Africa — do not use daylight saving at all.

Because the changes happen on different dates, the gap between two cities can shift twice a year. London and New York are normally 5 hours apart, but for a couple of weeks in March and for about a week around the end of October the gap is only 4 hours.

Half-Hour and Quarter-Hour Zones

Most zones are whole hours from UTC, but not all. India uses UTC+5:30, Iran UTC+3:30, Afghanistan UTC+4:30, Nepal UTC+5:45 and parts of Australia UTC+9:30. The converter handles these automatically, which is where mental arithmetic most often goes wrong.

GMT, UTC and Zone Abbreviations

GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) and UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) show the same time for everyday purposes; UTC is the precise scientific standard. Abbreviations such as EST, PST, CET and IST are convenient but ambiguous: IST can mean India, Irish or Israel Standard Time, and CST can mean Central Standard Time in North America or China Standard Time. This converter uses city-based zones instead, which avoids the confusion and always applies the correct daylight-saving rules for the date.

Scheduling Across Time Zones

For international meetings, find the hours that fall within the working day for everyone. London and New York share roughly 1 pm to 5 pm London time. Pakistan and the UK overlap most of the UK morning and the Pakistani afternoon. Between Asia and the American west coast there is often no overlap at all, so someone joins early or late. Always state the time zone in invitations, and remember that the date can differ — Monday evening in California is Tuesday morning in Asia.

Missing and Repeated Hours

On the night the clocks go forward, an hour of local time does not exist: in the UK, clocks jump from 01:00 to 02:00, so 01:30 never happens. If you enter such a time, the converter uses the time just after the change and says so. On the night the clocks go back, an hour happens twice; the converter uses the first occurrence.

Understanding Your Result

The headline gives the time in the target zone and whether it is the same, next or previous day.

The original line restates the time you entered and its UTC offset.

The target zone line gives that zone's offset on the date.

The difference line gives how far ahead or behind the target zone is.

The UTC line gives the same instant in Coordinated Universal Time.

When Should You Use This Calculator?

Use it to schedule calls and meetings across countries.

Use it to find the local time of a live event or launch.

Use it to plan travel and arrival times.

Use it to check the time before messaging friends and family abroad.

Common Mistakes

Assuming the difference never changes. Daylight saving shifts it.

Forgetting the date can change. Evening in the Americas is morning in Asia.

Confusing EST and EDT. New York is UTC−5 in winter and UTC−4 in summer.

Ignoring half-hour zones. India and others are 30 or 45 minutes offset.

Using last month's difference. Check the date you actually need.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time is 9 am in London in New York on 29 September 2026?

4 am. On that date London is on British Summer Time, UTC+1, and New York on Eastern Daylight Time, UTC−4, so New York is 5 hours behind. The same 9 am is 5 pm in Tokyo, which is 8 hours ahead of London.

What time is 9 am in Karachi in Los Angeles?

9 pm the previous day. Pakistan is UTC+5 all year, and Los Angeles is UTC−7 in summer, so it is 12 hours behind. In winter, when Los Angeles is on UTC−8, the gap grows to 13 hours.

Why does the time difference change during the year?

Many countries move their clocks for daylight saving, but on different dates, and many do not change at all. The United States changes in March and November, Europe in late March and late October, and Pakistan and India not at all.

Why is India 30 minutes off other zones?

India uses a single zone, UTC+5:30, chosen to sit near the middle of the country. So 9 am in New York during summer is 6:30 pm in India, 9 hours 30 minutes ahead. Nepal and parts of Australia also use half or quarter hours.

What is UTC?

Coordinated Universal Time, the world's reference time, which never changes for daylight saving. Time zones are described as offsets from it, such as UTC+5 for Pakistan or UTC−5 for New York in winter. GMT is the same as UTC for everyday purposes.

How do I schedule a meeting across time zones?

Convert the proposed time into each participant's zone and check it falls within working hours. London and New York overlap for about 4 to 5 hours in the London afternoon; Asia and the Americas often have little or no overlap.
