Number to Words Converter

Write any number out in English words — whole numbers, decimals and negatives, ordinals like twenty-first, and cheque style — in US or British style.

Digits, with an optional decimal point or minus sign.

About the Number to Words Converter

Numbers sometimes need to be written in words: on cheques, in legal documents and contracts, in formal writing, on invitations, and when teaching children to read and spell numbers. Writing large numbers correctly is surprisingly easy to get wrong — where do the hyphens go, when does "and" belong, and what is 1,000,005 in words?

This number to words converter writes any number out in English words: whole numbers up to the quadrillions, decimals, negative numbers, ordinals such as "twenty-first", and cheque style amounts such as "One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100". It works in American style, without "and", or British style, with "and" after hundreds.

How to Use the Number to Words Converter

Enter the number using digits. Commas and spaces are ignored, so 1,500,250 works.

Choose how to write it: in words, as a cheque amount, or as an ordinal.

Tick British style to include "and" after hundreds and before the last part.

How Numbers Are Written in Words

split the number into groups of three digits from the right
write each group (one to nine hundred ninety-nine)
add its scale word: thousand, million, billion, trillion, quadrillion
  hyphenate twenty-one to ninety-nine
  decimals: "point" then each digit

Step-by-Step Example

1234.56

  Groups: 1 | 234 . 56
Words: one thousand | two hundred thirty-four | point five six
Cheque: One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100

1,000,005 in British style: one million and five.

21 as an ordinal: twenty-first (21st).

American and British Styles

The main difference is the word "and". American English usually writes 101 as "one hundred one" and 1,250 as "one thousand two hundred fifty". British English writes "one hundred and one" and "one thousand two hundred and fifty", and also uses "and" before a final part below 100, as in "one million and five". Both are correct in their own context; choose the style your readers expect.

Hyphens

Compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine take a hyphen: forty-two, seventy-six, ninety-nine. The hyphen stays inside larger numbers — three hundred forty-two — but hundred, thousand and million are never hyphenated to the rest. Fractions written as words are often hyphenated too, such as two-thirds.

Writing Cheques

On a cheque, write the whole amount in words followed by the cents or pence as a fraction of 100, such as "Two hundred fifty and 00/100", and draw a line through the remaining space so nothing can be added. Start writing at the far left of the line. If the amounts in words and figures disagree, banks usually treat the words as the correct amount, which is why the words matter.

Ordinal Numbers

Ordinal numbers show position: first, second, third. To write a large ordinal in words, change only the last word: one hundred twenty-one becomes one hundred twenty-first. Most numbers add -th (fourth, seventh), words ending in y change to -ieth (twentieth, fortieth), and a few are irregular: first, second, third, fifth, eighth, ninth and twelfth. The suffixes in figures follow the last digit — 1st, 2nd, 3rd — except 11th, 12th and 13th.

Large Numbers

This converter uses the short scale, used in English-speaking countries today, where a billion is a thousand million (10⁹) and a trillion is a thousand billion (10¹²). Some other languages and older British usage used the long scale, where a billion meant a million million. The converter handles numbers up to 18 digits before the point, just under one quintillion.

Style Guides

Many style guides recommend writing out numbers from one to nine (or one to one hundred) in running text and using figures for larger numbers, but always writing out a number that begins a sentence. Legal documents often give both, as in "fifteen (15) days".

Numbers in Other Languages

Every language has its own rules for writing numbers. French uses soixante-dix, literally sixty-ten, for seventy, and quatre-vingts, four twenties, for eighty. German puts units before tens, as in einundzwanzig, one-and-twenty, for twenty-one, and writes numbers as single long words. Indian English uses lakh for one hundred thousand and crore for ten million, grouping digits as 1,00,000. This converter writes numbers in standard international English with the short scale.

Reading Numbers Aloud

When reading numbers aloud, people often simplify: 1,500 becomes "fifteen hundred" and 2024 becomes "twenty twenty-four" for a year. For money, "one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty-six cents" is the formal form. Phone numbers and account numbers are read digit by digit, and decimals such as 3.14 are read "three point one four", as the converter writes them.

Checking Large Amounts

For large sums in contracts, reading the words back while looking at the figures is a simple but effective check, since a missing zero changes the words completely.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I write 1234.56 in words?

One thousand two hundred thirty-four point five six. The digits after the decimal point are read one at a time. On a cheque the same amount is written One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100.

How do I write a cheque amount in words?

Write the whole amount in words, then and, then the cents or pence as a fraction of 100, such as Two hundred fifty and 00/100. Draw a line after the words so nothing can be added.

Should I write one hundred and one or one hundred one?

Both are correct. American English usually leaves out and, writing one hundred one, while British English includes it, writing one hundred and one. Tick British style for the version with and.

When do you use hyphens in numbers?

Hyphenate compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine, such as forty-two and seventy-six, including inside larger numbers, as in three hundred forty-two. Words such as hundred, thousand and million are never joined to the rest with a hyphen.

How do you write ordinal numbers in words?

How large a number can be written?

Numbers up to 18 digits before the decimal point, just under one quintillion, using thousand, million, billion, trillion and quadrillion. These are short-scale names, where a billion is a thousand million.
