About the Time Addition Calculator

Adding up times is surprisingly awkward. 1 hour 45 minutes plus 2 hours 30 minutes is not 3.75 hours or "3:75" — it is 4 hours 15 minutes, because minutes roll over at 60, not 100. Adding a whole list of times — the lengths of songs in a playlist, the hours on a set of job sheets, the time spent on each task in a project, or the laps of a training session — by hand invites mistakes.

This time addition calculator adds any list of durations and gives the total in h:mm:ss, in words, as decimal hours and minutes, and in days if it runs past 24 hours. It understands several formats — 1:45, 1:02:03, 2h 30m, 50m, 45s — and you can subtract entries by starting them with a minus sign.

How the Times Are Added

  2. add them up (subtracting any negative entries)
  3. convert the total back to hours, minutes and seconds

Working in seconds avoids the carrying and borrowing that makes adding times by hand so error-prone.

Step-by-Step Example

1:45 + 2:30 + 0:50 + 3:15.

  Minutes:  45 + 30 + 50 + 15 = 140 min = 2 h 20 min
  Hours:     1 +  2 +  0 +  3 = 6 h
  Total:    6 h + 2 h 20 min = 8 h 20 min

  = 8:20:00 = 8.33 hours = 500 minutes
  Average of the four: 8:20 ÷ 4 = 2:05

2h 15m + 45m − 0:30 = 2 h 30 min.

Why Decimal Arithmetic Goes Wrong

On an ordinary calculator, typing 1.45 + 2.30 gives 3.75, which looks like "3 hours 75 minutes" — but that is not a real time, and the correct answer is 4:15. The problem is that the digits after the point in 1.45 mean hundredths, not minutes. Either convert each time to decimal hours first (1:45 = 1.75, 2:30 = 2.5, total 4.25 = 4 h 15 min) or use a time calculator that understands minutes and seconds.

Adding Times in a Spreadsheet

Spreadsheets can add times, but formatting catches people out. If a column of durations adds up to more than 24 hours, a normal time format wraps around and shows only the remainder — 26 hours displays as 02:00. Use a duration format such as [h]:mm to show the full total. To turn a spreadsheet time into decimal hours, multiply it by 24, since spreadsheets store times as fractions of a day.

A Playlist Example

Suppose a playlist has five songs lasting 3:42, 4:15, 2:58, 5:07 and 3:33, entered as 0:03:42 and so on, or simply as 3m 42s. The seconds add to 42 + 15 + 58 + 7 + 33 = 155, which is 2 minutes 35 seconds; the minutes add to 3 + 4 + 2 + 5 + 3 = 17. The total is therefore 19 minutes 35 seconds. Written as h:mm:ss that is 0:19:35, and the average song lasts about 3 minutes 55 seconds. The same approach works for a whole album, a podcast series or the clips in a video project.

Averages of Times

The calculator also gives the average of the entries, which is the total divided by the number of entries. Averages of times are useful for comparing laps, typical task lengths or the usual duration of calls. Remember that the average is sensitive to unusually long or short entries: one very long call can raise the average noticeably, so it is worth looking at the individual times as well as the average.

Subtracting Times

Start a line with a minus sign to take it away from the total. This is handy for removing breaks from a list of work periods, deducting layovers from a trip, or finding how much of a time budget is left: enter the budget, then subtract each amount used. If the result is negative, the total shows with a minus sign, meaning more time was used than was available.

The headline is the total in h:mm:ss.

The in words line gives the total in hours, minutes and seconds.

The decimal line gives decimal hours and total minutes.

The days line shows whole days when the total exceeds 24 hours.

Common Mistakes

Adding times as decimals. 1.45 + 2.30 is not 4:15 on a normal calculator.

Forgetting that 60 minutes make an hour. Carry to the hours column at 60.

Letting a spreadsheet wrap past 24 hours. Use a duration format.

Mixing formats in one entry. Write 1:30 or 1h 30m, not 1:30m.

Reading a plain number as hours. A bare 90 means 90 minutes; write 90h or 90:00 for hours.
