About the Junk Removal Cost Calculator
Clearing out a garage, basement, rental property or estate often produces more junk than a household bin or a car can handle. Junk removal companies send a truck and crew to load and haul it away, and most price the job by how much of the truck it fills. Fees for certain items, such as mattresses and appliances, and minimum charges for small loads, complete the price.
This junk removal cost calculator estimates the price from the volume of junk in cubic yards, the truck's capacity and the price of a full load. It applies the minimum charge, adds fees for surcharged items, and shows roughly what share of the truck the job will fill.
How to Use the Junk Removal Cost Calculator
Enter the junk volume in cubic yards.
Enter the truck capacity and the price for a full load.
Enter the minimum charge, the number of surcharged items and the fee per item.
The Formulas
share of truck = volume ÷ truck capacity
load price = share × full-load price
total = max(minimum, load price) + items × fee
Step-by-Step Example
Six cubic yards of junk, a 15 yd³ truck at 600 a full load, two surcharged items at 50.
share 6 ÷ 15 = 0.4, up to half a truck
load 0.4 × 600 = 240
items 2 × 50 = 100
total 340
Estimating the Volume
Picture the junk stacked in a neat pile and measure it in feet: length × width × height ÷ 27 gives cubic yards. A pile 6 feet long, 4 feet wide and 4 feet high is about 3.6 cubic yards. Some reference points help: a standard pickup bed holds about 2 to 3 cubic yards, a sofa takes up about 2 to 3, a mattress and box spring about 1, and a refrigerator about 1. A typical junk removal truck holds 12 to 15 cubic yards, roughly the contents of a one-car garage cleared out.
Pricing Structures
Companies usually publish prices for fractions of a truck: a minimum load, a quarter, half, three-quarters and a full truck. The calculator uses a proportional price, which is close to how these tiers work. Some charge by weight instead, especially for heavy materials such as concrete, dirt, roofing shingles and construction debris, which may have weight limits per load and extra disposal fees.
Surcharged Items
Some items cost more to dispose of. Mattresses and box springs are banned from many landfills or must be recycled. Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners contain refrigerant that must be recovered by certified technicians. Tyres, televisions and computer monitors, and other electronics often carry recycling fees. Paint, chemicals, asbestos and other hazardous materials are usually refused and need special disposal.
Junk Removal or Dumpster Rental?
A dumpster rental gives you a container for several days to fill at your own pace, which suits renovations and large cleanouts where you can do the loading. Junk removal includes the labour, so it suits heavy items, upper floors, quick clearances and people who cannot lift. Compare the full cost, including your time, before choosing.
Reducing the Cost
Donate usable furniture, appliances and building materials to charities and reuse stores, many of which collect for free. Sell items of value. Recycle metals at scrap yards. Break down bulky items where safe so they take less space. Moving everything to one accessible spot, such as the driveway, can also reduce the labour charge with some companies.
Preparing for Pickup
Before the crew arrives, separate items you want to keep, donate or sell from the junk, and point out anything that needs special handling. Make sure there is clear access for the truck and a safe path from the junk to the driveway. Ask whether the price includes loading from basements, attics and upper floors, which takes more time.
Questions to Ask Companies
Ask how they price: by volume, by weight or by item, and whether the quote is fixed once they see the pile. Check whether disposal fees are included, where the junk goes and how much is recycled or donated, and whether the company is licensed and insured. Reputable companies give an on-site estimate before loading and stick to it.
Construction Debris
Renovation waste such as drywall, wood, tiles and roofing is heavy and often priced by weight or with extra fees. For large renovation projects, a roll-off dumpster on site may be cheaper and more convenient.
Estate and Hoarding Cleanouts
Large cleanouts may involve several truckloads, sorting valuables and documents, and sometimes biohazard cleanup. Companies often quote these after an on-site visit, sometimes with a day rate for the crew. Allow extra time and budget, and ask family members to remove keepsakes first so nothing important is hauled away by mistake.
Understanding Your Result
The headline gives the estimated total.
The load line shows the share of the truck and the load price.
The item fees line shows surcharges.
The sizing line compares truck and pickup sizes.
When Should You Use This Calculator?
Use it before a move, renovation or estate cleanout.
Use it to compare quotes from junk removal companies.
Use it to price jobs if you run a hauling business.
Common Mistakes
Underestimating volume. Loose junk takes more space than expected.
Forgetting item fees. Mattresses and appliances cost extra.
Including hazardous waste. It needs separate disposal.
Paying to haul what could be donated. Give away usable items.
