How this was calculated

  1. Carpet800 × 0.30 = 240.00

About the Carpet Cleaning Cost Calculator

Professional carpet cleaning removes the grit, oils and allergens that vacuuming leaves behind, and helps carpets last longer. Prices are quoted in different ways, per room, per square foot or as packages, which makes quotes hard to compare. Stairs, pet treatment and minimum charges add further variation.

This carpet cleaning cost calculator turns a job into square feet, applies a price per square foot, adds stairs and pet odour treatment, and applies the company's minimum charge. It shows the estimated total and the average price per room.

How to Use the Carpet Cleaning Cost Calculator

Enter the number of carpeted rooms and the average room size in square feet.

Enter the price per square foot.

Enter the number of stairs and their price, the share needing pet treatment and its price, and the minimum charge.

The Formulas

area = rooms × average room size
carpet = area × price per ft²
stairs = number of stairs × price per stair
pet = area × share needing treatment × price per ft²
  total     = max(minimum, carpet + stairs + pet)

Step-by-Step Example

Four 200 ft² rooms at 0.30 per ft², 12 stairs at 3 each, minimum 100.

  area 4 × 200 = 800 ft²
  carpet 800 × 0.30 = 240
  stairs 12 × 3 = 36
total 276, about 69 per room

Per Room or Per Square Foot?

Many companies advertise a price per room, often with a size limit, such as rooms up to 200 or 250 square feet. Larger rooms, open-plan living areas and through-rooms may count as two. Others price per square foot, which is fairer for unusual layouts. Converting both to square feet makes quotes comparable. Measure each room's length and width, multiply, and use the average size if rooms differ.

Stairs and Hallways

Stairs are cleaned by hand tools rather than the main wand, so they take far longer per square foot than open carpet. Most companies charge per step or treat a staircase as a room. Hallways and landings may be included with adjacent rooms or charged separately; check the quote.

Pet Odour and Stains

Ordinary cleaning removes surface soil but not urine that has soaked into the backing and pad. Pet treatment uses enzyme products or sub-surface extraction tools, sometimes with a UV light to find affected areas, and is charged extra. Old, heavy stains such as wine, coffee or rust may also need specialised treatments, and some cannot be fully removed.

Cleaning Methods

Hot water extraction, often called steam cleaning, sprays hot water and cleaning solution into the carpet and extracts it with powerful suction. It is recommended by many carpet makers and removes the most soil, but the carpet needs several hours to dry. Low-moisture methods, such as encapsulation and bonnet cleaning, dry quickly and suit offices and maintenance cleaning. Prices are similar; choose the method that suits the carpet and how soon the room is needed.

Extras and Preparation

Moving furniture, applying carpet protector, deodorising, cleaning rugs and upholstery all add cost. Vacuuming beforehand and clearing small items from the floor can speed the job. Ask whether the price includes moving furniture, and what happens with heavy pieces such as pianos and beds.

Minimum Charges

Every visit involves travel, unloading equipment and setting up hoses, whether one rug or a whole house is cleaned. Minimum charges, often 100 to 150, cover that fixed time. If your job falls below the minimum, adding another room or a staircase may cost little extra.

How Often to Clean

Most carpet makers recommend professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months, and some require it to keep the warranty valid. Homes with pets, children, smokers or allergy sufferers benefit from cleaning every six to twelve months. High-traffic areas such as hallways and stairs show wear first and may need cleaning between whole-house visits. Regular vacuuming, at least weekly and more often in busy areas, removes the gritty soil that cuts carpet fibres and keeps carpets looking better between professional cleans.

Drying and Aftercare

After hot water extraction, carpets usually take four to twelve hours to dry, depending on airflow, humidity and carpet type. Opening windows, running fans and air conditioning speed drying. Walk on damp carpet in clean socks rather than shoes, and avoid replacing furniture until the carpet is dry, or put foil or plastic tabs under the legs to prevent rust and dye marks.

Comparing Quotes

Ask each company how they define a room, what is included, which method they use, and whether pre-treatment, stain removal, furniture moving and protector are extra. Low advertised prices sometimes lead to large add-ons on the day. A written quote based on square footage avoids surprises.

Rugs and Upholstery

Area rugs, especially wool and handmade rugs, are often cleaned separately, sometimes off site. Sofas and chairs can be cleaned on the same visit for an extra charge per piece.

Understanding Your Result

The headline gives the estimated total.

The carpet line shows the area and the main charge.

The extras line shows stairs and pet treatment.

The per room line gives the average per room, or notes the minimum charge.

When Should You Use This Calculator?

Use it to compare quotes priced per room and per square foot.

Use it to budget for a whole-house clean.

Use it to price jobs if you run a carpet cleaning business.

Common Mistakes

Assuming all rooms count the same. Large rooms may count as two.

Forgetting stairs. They are priced separately.

Expecting pet odours to vanish with a standard clean. Treatment costs extra.

Ignoring the minimum. Small jobs may cost the minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does carpet cleaning cost per room?

Four 200 ft² rooms are 800 ft²; at 0.30 per ft² that is 240. Adding 12 stairs at 3 each brings it to 276, about 69 per room. Many companies quote 30 to 75 per room.

How much does it cost to clean carpeted stairs?

Stairs are slow to clean, so most companies charge per step, often 2 to 5 each, or treat a staircase as one room. Twelve stairs at 3 add 36 to the bill.

Is pet odour treatment extra?

Usually. Urine soaks into the backing and pad, so it needs enzyme treatment or sub-surface extraction beyond a normal clean. Companies often charge per square foot treated or per affected area.

Why is there a minimum charge?

Travel, set-up and equipment costs are the same for a small job, so most carpet cleaners set a minimum, often 100 to 150. One small rug or room may cost the minimum rather than its square-foot price.

Is steam cleaning or dry cleaning cheaper?

Prices are similar. Hot water extraction, often called steam cleaning, removes the most dirt but needs drying time. Low-moisture methods dry faster. Choose based on carpet type and manufacturer advice.

How often should carpets be professionally cleaned?

Many manufacturers recommend professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months to keep warranties valid, more often in busy homes with pets or children. Regular vacuuming between cleans extends carpet life.
